Hello UIUC Community!
Next Friday, 10/11/2024, UIAS will be hosting their October Open House from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at the Campus Observatory (901 S Mathews Ave, Urbana, IL 61801).
Clouds permitting, October yields the prime conditions to view Saturn through their 128 year-old refracting telescope. Additionally, due to the cool, consistent weather, you will have the opportunity to view the moon in extraordinary detail, capturing every crater and crevice. For an individualized experience, the modern backyard telescopes are available for observation. As you explore the history of the cosmos, stop by the antique room for a glimpse into the observatory’s own past. Finally, throughout the evening, graduate researchers from the U of I will be presenting their novel findings. Specifically, the group will have the pleasure of hearing from David Vizgan and Thinh Nguyen regarding their compelling efforts in high-redshift gravitationally lensed galaxies and galaxy evolution simulations respectively.
With all these activities, your experience will surely be stellar!
