U-C BOOKS TO PRISONERS SPRING BENEFIT BOOK SALE
SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 2025
9 AM – 5 PM
URBANA CHAMPAIGN INDEPENDENT MEDIA CENTER, 202 S. BROADWAY, URBANA.
For one day only, people who attend this book sale can purchase gently used books for less than thrift store prices and support an excellent cause at the same time.
The Urbana Champaign Books to Prisoners (B2P) Spring Benefit Book Sale takes place from 9 am to 5 pm on April 5 at the Independent Media Center (IMC) located at 202 S. Broadway in Urbana. This fundraiser provides critical support for its mission: to provide free books to people incarcerated in Illinois, and to promote education in the community about prisons and incarceration.
Select from among approximately 8,000 books in almost all subjects and genres, including comic books, young adult fiction, textbooks and a large selection of children’s books.
While there will be a few specially priced books, the majority will sell for $1.00 – $2.00
U-C Books to Prisoners T-shirts, $20 and our tote bags, $5.
Cash, checks and credit cards are welcome, and carry-out service is provided.
This local organization has operated for 20 years. Over that time, it has sent well over 180,000 books to 24,500 incarcerated individuals. As a working group of the IMC, it is operated by its volunteers who collect and process thousands of community donated books each year, as well as thousands of book requests sent from prisoners. U-C Books to Prisoners also collaborates with the Sheriff’s Office, to stock and staff a small lending library in the Champaign County Jail, one of the few in the state, and also keeps the library at the County Juvenile Detention Center filled with a wide variety of up-to-date fiction and nonfiction for the youth there.
Many ask why so many books are for sale instead of being sent to prisoners. B2P only sells books whose content or used condition is banned by IDOC, or titles that B2P has enough already, or are not requested often enough by prisoners to warrant a place on B2P’s limited shelf space.
