El Grito is more than an independence day.
This September 15th and for the third time, Chambana will host a small ceremony and a huge celebration to commemorate independence from Spain—it all started with a grito/shout in 1810 by many Latin American countries, especially Mexico and Guatemala.
El Grito is more than an independence day. For ten minutes ALL Mexicans stand to feel the energy of union, of that thing that screams Viva México! For the first time at Champaign’s The Beat, the intersection of Market and Taylor streets enlivens 6:30 with balloons and authentic fun for kids. At 8, live dancing música (Los Texanoz) and food trucks (La Paloma, Maize, Juanito’s) on the street will be enhanced by folk costumes dancing (UIUC’s Mitotiani) and Mariachi Tigres and at 10 PM everyone will shout out for joy. It’s a school night and they will close up at 11 so people can go watch the Mexico City ceremony at midnite on TV.
