Grandparents Day is the second Sunday of September and we have some ideas on how to spend it with the grandparents in your life
Any day is a great day to plan an activity with your kids and the grandparents in your life. In celebration of Grandparents’ Day — always the second Sunday in September — there are some great low-cost events happening in Champaign-Urbana and beyond that you may want to pencil in.
Nearby Event Especially For Grandparents Day
Grandparents Day at Scovill Zoo, Decatur
Sunday, Sept. 8, 1-4 p.m.
Enjoy an old-fashioned fall festival with animal presentations, cake walks, games, and more. Grandparents are free with a paying child. General zoo admission, carousel and train fees apply.
More Events This Weekend
While not necessarily “Grandparents Day” events, we have selected a few more events that you may consider when making plans with grandparents this weekend.
Old Orchard Lanes 60th Anniversary Celebration
Sunday, Sept. 8, noon-6 p.m.
Grandparents love to go bowling! Or, if bowling isn’t their cup of tea, the food at Old Orchard is sure to be a hit for kids and grands alike.
Weekend Train Rides at Monticello Railway Museum
Sept. 7-8
You may board the train at the Nelson Crossing Depot (the main museum site) or at the Wabash Depot in downtown Monticello. The train ride lasts approximately one hour, however, passengers may choose to lay over at either depot. You can walk through the museum cars and view many pieces of rolling stock at the museum site, as well as visit the museum’s gift shop. At the Wabash Depot you can walk to many shops and restaurants around Monticello’s Courthouse Square. Visit the event for schedule info.
10 ways grandparents can spend time with grandchildren in Champaign-Urbana
If the above events don’t fit in your family’s schedule, we have more ideas you can peruse. Whether it’s a visit to Curtis Orchard (a favorite with our kids’ grandmother) or a drive to Amish Country (maybe to the Broom Corn Festival happening this weekend), there is something for every taste.
Bottom line? If there are grandparent figures in your family’s life, find a way to spend some time with them this weekend or any weekend and tell them how much you appreciate them!
