Aside from showing off some of the best sunsets in Champaign-Urbana, Sunset Ridge Park has something to offer everyone from toddlers to teens, leisurely walkers to active adults
Sunset Ridge Park in Champaign is a family favorite for many who have discovered what it has to offer
The landscape of Champaign-Urbana parks and playgrounds is a vast one. From rolling green spaces that allow kite-flying to playgrounds that have some of the most impressive equipment around, C-U parks seem to have something for everyone. However, we can all agree that sometimes we want to visit someplace brand new and try it on for size to see if it, too, might become a new favorite.
Sunset Ridge Park, a picturesque 18-acre park nestled in the northwest corner of Champaign, may be just that.
Located on Staley Road, just north of Bradley Avenue, this park is on the far western edge of Champaign. It is one of the few playgrounds in this corner of Champaign, but it is far more than just a playground.
Featuring a covered shelter, a large play structure for older elementary kids, a preschool-sized play structure for younger kids, a skate park (really!), basketball and tennis/pickleball courts, a soccer field and a nice walking path, Sunset Ridge Park has something for everyone who visits.
Some of the unique things you’ll find on this playground are a bouldering wall and some equipment that kids who love to bounce will gravitate toward. With the height of the handles, little ones may need a parent helper to really get those going! The two complementary play structures closely mirror the design of the other, with the major change simply being in size.
For thrill seekers, don’t forget your helmets, skateboard or roller blades. This is one of just two skate parks in Champaign-Urbana — the other at Spalding Park in Champaign — and is just right for people starting out with these activities.
Tips for Parents
Perks for parents taking their kids to Sunset Ridge Park include a great shaded pavilion to supervise the fun. The playground itself is set quite a distance from the roads (not to say someone still couldn’t make a run for it), but we do think you’ll be able to relax in the shade while your kids make new friends and burn off some energy. This park is adjacent to a Champaign neighborhood, so you will find many kids who bike over here to hang out.
Is Sunset Ridge Park good for toddlers?
Sunset Ridge Park is a great park for toddlers! The shade provided by the pavilion and the large play structure makes it a good place to take a break. Toddlers will love the play structure and if they do wander over to the larger equipment, it will still be pretty safe for them until they get to the top and are faced with a couple of drop-offs. This is a mulched playground, so if you have someone who likes to put things in their mouth, you may not find this to be the best park for them. Ultimately, this park does make our list of baby and toddler friendly parks in our area.
