Find out what to do with your family on Father’s Day weekend in the Champaign-Urbana area
No matter what the dad in your life likes to do, there’s a good chance you can find something up his alley this Father’s Day
Some dads fish. Some dads play golf. Some dads like to light up the barbecue — and some just want to take a nap. A long nap.
We have cultivated a list of fun things to do on Father’s Day in and around Champaign-Urbana that can match any dad’s personality. (Keep your fingers crossed that the weather will be nice on June 16.) We’ve put together some of our favorite events in one spot to help dad relax and feel appreciated, as well as providing fun for other members of the family. Take your Dad fishing: Fishing is a lot of fun and great for parents and kids alike. Check out our guide on where to go, and what you will need, to fish in and around Champaign-Urbana. Free Fishing Days are June 14-17 in Illinois this year, so you can skip getting a fishing license to enjoy fishing this weekend only.
Take your Dad out for barbecue: Have you seen our Champaign-Urbana Area Barbecue picks? There are plenty of ideas on where to take dad for dinner in case he doesn’t want the role of grill master.
Speaking of food: If the dad in your life is a carnivore, here’s a tip: Grill him a nice, big, fat, juicy steak. And we know just where to get one: Visit Urbana’s Market at the Square and hit up the folks at Triple S Farms, where the selection is wide and the taste is certifiably YUM. (But get there early; Triple S is very popular, for good reason, and the most popular cuts of meat go fast.)
Free train rides for Dad at Monticello Railway Museum: Fathers ride free with a paid child’s fare for Father’s Day weekend. Enjoy a nostalgic train ride with Dad or Grandpa, as grandparents love this annual tradition, too.
Free swim for Dad at Crystal Lake Park Family Aquatic Center: One free adult admission for Dad with a child’s admission to Crystal Lake on Father’s Day (Sunday).
Take Dad to play foot golf: It might not be as relaxing as a round of golf without the kiddos, but if you want to do something together, head out to Lake of the Woods in Mahomet for nine or 18 holes of foot golf. Foot Golf can be played by children and adults. If you can kick a soccer ball, you can play Foot Golf! Tip: bring your own soccer ball and save $1.
