Christmas movies are ubiquitous at this time of year, and the Champaign-Urbana area offers numerous opportunities for viewers to take in a classic holiday film.
Here’s a breakdown of the options available as Christmas approaches:
Elf and Christmas Vacation, at Harvest Moon Drive-In: Visit the Gibson City staple to see two classics at the drive-in. Showing Nov. 24-25. But it’s not just the movies; Harvest Moon will be dressed up with more than 50,000 lights, inflatables, photo spots, a lighted tunnel, hot chocolate, Christmas cookies and a meet-and-greet with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
Christmas Vacation, at the Virginia Theatre: Don’t want to drive the Gibson City to see Clark Griswold and friends? Just head over the Virginia in downtown Champaign. Showing Nov. 25 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
White Christmas, at Savoy 16: Bing Crosby stars with Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and others in the 1954 classic, which shows Nov. 26 and Nov. 29 at Savoy 16.
The Polar Express and Christmas Vacation, at Harvest Moon Drive-In: We’re sensing a theme here. Looks like Christmas Vacation is the movie of the year. If you missed it earlier, here’s another chance, along with The Polar Express at the Gibson City drive-in. Showing Dec. 1-2. The same “extras” also apply at described during the previous weekend (above).
It’s a Wonderful Life, at the Virginia Theatre: If you’ve never seen the 1946 classic featuring Jimmy Stewart, do yourself a favor and go check it out in this historical venue. Trust us, you won’t be sorry. Showing Dec. 2 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Elf, at Savoy 16: “Bye, Buddy, hope you find your dad!” It’s easy to laugh out loud while just thinking about Will Farrell’s performance. Showing Dec. 3 and Dec. 6 at Savoy 16.
Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, at Savoy 16: “You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch!” We love the music in this film. Showing Dec. 3 and Dec. 6 at Savoy 16.
Christmas with the Chosen: Holy Night, at Savoy 16: Not gonna lie — not an expert on this 2023 faith-based film, but we’re told the magnificent Andrea Bocelli is involved with the music in it, and that’s a ringing endorsement as far as we’re concerned. Showing Dec. 12 at Savoy 16.
