Local organizations come together to educate the Champaign-Urbana community during fire prevention week
Touch a truck, meet a firefighter and other free fun for families coming up for fire prevention week
National Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 9-15 and local emergency agencies are planning a variety of fun, free, family activities in the Champaign-Urbana area and beyond to help bring attention to this important topic.
Fire Prevention Week was established in 1922 to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on Oct. 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on Oct. 9, 1871.
This year’s FPW campaign — “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape™” — works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from home fires. This year is also the 100th year of Fire Prevention Week!
