When’s the last time you spent $3 for a movie ticket on a Saturday? Yep, that’s what we thought.
On Sept. 3, you can do just that.
In conjunction with National Cinema Day, more than 3,000 theaters nationwide will offer $3 tickets for all showings. According to The Associated Press, major chains — including AMC, which owns the theater in Champaign — will participate. Also, Savoy 16, owned by Phoenix Theatres, is participating.
The Cinema Foundation, the nonprofit arm of the National Association of Theater Owners, initiated the promotion to generate excitement during what is normally a soft weekend for moviegoing. After a strong summer season that featured the release of Top Gun: Maverick, the early fall period is light on high-powered releases.
According to the AP, organizers said the promotion is a trial — the first of its kind in the United States — that could become an annual event.
