Move over, powdered cocoa mixes — hot chocolate bombs are the newest trending edible gift, and we help you find them in the Champaign-Urbana area
Maybe you or your children have heard that hot chocolate bombs are all the rage, or you’ve found yourself trying to DIY this delicious confection. They have gained momentum and popularity via TikTok and other social media outlets, and we have already received questions about where to find such treats in Champaign-Urbana.
Whatever has inspired your search, we are here to help you find these cocoa-filled balls of goodness.
What are hot chocolate bombs?
Hot chocolate bombs — or hot cocoa bombs — are cute little hollowed-out balls of chocolate filled with yumminess that when mixed with hot milk, become a decadent, warm, cozy cup of cocoa. When you pour hot milk into the mug, the chocolate melts and magically releases the marshmallows and cocoa hiding inside, in just a matter of seconds. (See the video below.)
We saw one genius description on USA TODAY: “Basically, it’s a bath bomb you can eat.”
Hot chocolate bombs have also proven that good things do indeed happen in 2020.

We’re more interested in where to buy these from local vendors, and that’s who we have listed here. Many of them offer special flavors, and of course some are holiday-themed.

Are you looking to make your own DIY hot cocoa bombs? We can’t guarantee that they will look as beautiful and polished as the professionals, but you can enjoy a fun bonding experience with your family.
Here’s what you need for the ingredients. Of course, once you get the hang of it, you can experiment with different flavors. These are just the basics.
(We have included affiliate links* below; purchases made through those links support our small business. Thank you!)
Make sure to have on hand: hot chocolate powder, marshmallows, melting chocolate, optional sprinkles and/or candy cane bits.
- Obtain two silicone circular or spherical molds.*
- Melt your baking chocolate and spread the chocolate so that it covers the mold with a thin coating of chocolate. This will be your shell.
- Let the chocolate harden. We put ours in the freezer because we were impatient. Once hardened, fill the shell with your powdered cocoa mix, marshmallows, and other optional toppings.
- Push the two sides of your shell together (you may need to use some melted chocolate to “seal” your shell. You have now successfully made your first hot chocolate bomb.
- The real fun begins when you place your creation in your hot milk or water. Our kids loved watching the shell explode and then melt as the toppings filled the cup.
If you get the hang of it, it could be an easy, inexpensive holiday gift. Don’t forget to add a cute mug. (We got some really cute mugs at Columbia Street Roastery!)
