Where to find the best guacamole in the Champaign-Urbana area
Let’s face it — freshly made guacamole just can’t be beat. We all have our preferences when it comes to our guac and while some prefer theirs to be thick and bursting with tomatoes, onions, and more, others prefer theirs to be smooth and creamy. Pair guacamole with some freshly baked chips and a fruity margarita, and you might as well just skip the entree.
We set out to find some of your local favorite places for the green stuff, and your recommendations did not disappoint. As with all of our “favorite food” posts, we focus on locally owned restaurants around Champaign-Urbana and beyond.
Breaking Taco, 608 E. Main St., Mahomet: “Thick and chunky … just the way that I like it.”
Cactus Grill, 1405 S. Neil St., Champaign: “Worst parking lot. Best guacamole.”
Fiesta Cafe, 216 S. First St., Champaign: “Their Guacamole Grande is so fresh. It is homemade several times a day.”
Huaraches Moroleon, 805 Philo Road, Urbana: “They have real guac … and they even add jalapeno if you like it spicy! We sit and munch their guac and salsas all evening long.” “Hands down Huaraches Moroleon!”
Maize, 100 N. Chestnut St. (in The Station), Champaign: “Their crispy chips and chunky guacamole! the best guac.” Also has a location in the Illini Union as well as a food truck.
La Mixteca, 510 N. Cunningham Ave., Urbana: “The best guacamole.” “Can confirm.”
El Progreso Tienda y Taqueria, 1017 W. Bloomington Road, Champaign: “Wow. $3 for a generous portion of FRESH guac. But this is spicy spicy with lots of fresh jalapeños — we don’t even really like spicy and we LOVED it. Guac comes by itself there, chips are separate.”
El Rancho Grande, 505 Commerce Dr., Savoy: “We love to order the guacamole, queso, and chips. Sometimes we have enough of an appetite left over for our meal, but many times, we fill up on chips and dip.”
And finally…
Ancho & Agave: It is located in Bloomington, but those who’ve eaten there say the guac is worth the drive.
