Cinnamon rolls have become a popular staple of American breakfasts; here’s where you can find the yummiest ones in the Champaign-Urbana area
Please pass the cinnamon rolls! Whether you are looking to bake your rolls at home, or purchase them frozen or ready-to-eat, the Champaign-Urbana area offers many amazing options that are sure to please the palate. And those of you in the know about these options did not hold back when asked to fill the rest of us in.
Your grocery store bakery probably does an excellent job satisfying your family’s cinnamon roll craving. (As does everyone’s favorite Pillsbury refrigerated roll dough that SCARES ME every time the tube seam bursts open. Every. Time. WHYYYYYY?) And many restaurants and caterers offer cinnamon rolls on their menus.
However, this list of locally owned area businesses can help you take cinnamon rolls to the next level.
Amy’s Sweet Delights, Royal: A new entry on this Food Trail got several reader mentions. Besides buying them at Ogden and Homer markets, you can pre-order these cinnamon rolls — and other custom delights like hot cocoa bombs, cookies, and more — for pickup, usually on Thursdays and Fridays in Royal. [UPDATE: starting in March 2024 Amy’s Sweet Delights will sell an assortment of goods several days a week at a kiosk near the Art Coop in Urbana’s Lincoln Square Mall. Check social media for schedule and selection.]
Bread Company, Urbana: “They make daily, fresh cinnamon rolls in the old style … elegant, big, refined, and cinnamony, but not dripping in goo (which can also be great).”
Central Illinois Bakehouse: (Available at Pekara Bakery & Bistro, Martinelli’s Market & Deli, area farmers markets, and more) “CIB cinnamon rolls are amazing. They’re made with croissant dough!” “They’re super flaky and delicious.” “Crispy edges, gooey center, and killer frosting.”
Geschenk Coffee Haus, St. Joseph: Cinnamon rolls can be ordered ahead for pick-up. Or its rolls can be purchased individually and make a great addition to any meal.
The Homestead Bakery, Arthur: If made-from-scratch Amish baked cinnamon rolls aren’t your thing, then stop reading. The Homestead Bakery offers caramel iced cinnamon rolls, honey yeast breads, and other delectable sweet breads. As one reader noted, “You have to try The Homestead Bakery’s cinnamon rolls. They are the best.” “I buy some to freeze so I always have them on hand.”
Hopscotch Bakery + Market, Champaign: “I could go there everyday for their cinnamon rolls, but I probably shouldn’t.”
Hunny Bunny Bakes, Champaign: Cinnamon rolls used to be available only through special order. Now, Hunny Bunny regularly sells delectable cinnamon rolls “with signature sticky bun caramel syrup and cream cheese frosting” individually or as fresh and frozen six-packs, on Thursday-Saturday from 10 a.m. until they sell out. “My husband has done extensive research locally and Mary’s rolls win hands down.”
Industrial Donut, Savoy: Keep an eye on its social media because you never know what day it plans to make a batch. When it does, it usually offers pre-ordering (and sometimes walk-in sales too). Be warned: the rolls are BIG. “Worth the wait.”
Lucky Moon Pies and More, Mahomet: “The cinnamon rolls at Lucky Moon are the best I’ve ever had. Perfectly cooked with a little crisp on the outside and warm and gooey on the inside. The icing is amazing.” “Sooooo good.”
The New Sweet Indulgence, Champaign: “The seasonal cinnamon rolls are my absolute favorite. You have to try their red velvet cinnamon rolls!” Featuring traditional rolls, as well as seasonal favorites such as pumpkin with cream cheese frosting, birthday cake with sprinkles, and red velvet cinnamon rolls, the bakery offers rolls that you can bake at home or purchase ready-to-eat. “Their icing on the roll is unmatched.” “Huge and delicious.”
Pies by Inge, Monticello: As one reader stated, Pies by Inge’s cinnamon rolls “became my pandemic addiction.” They are baked fresh every Wednesday; patrons may choose between cream cheese or buttercream icing. Pre-orders of six rolls and more are appreciated. Also sold at Whisk (Mahomet) and Cafe Kopi (Champaign).
RegCakes, Urbana: This has become C-U’s go-to location for gluten free baked goods, and several readers recommended its cinnamon rolls (vegan!).
Rick’s Bakery, Urbana: Baked fresh daily and made from scratch, Rick’s Bakery offers cinnamon rolls, almond bear claws, and other breakfast pastries.
Royal Donut, Danville: Cinnamon rolls here “are awesome and the size of a dinner plate.”
Silvercreek, Urbana: A couple of chambanamoms team members call this the best cinnamon roll in C-U. See drool-worthy pic below.
Ye Olde Donut Shoppe, Champaign: “Ye Olde Donut Shoppe has an amazing yeast cinnamon roll. It tastes like a cinnamon roll glazed donut.” “If you’re lucky you’ll stop by on a day when they have frosted their cinnamon rolls with chocolate or cream cheese.” “Amazingggggggggg.”
