The coronavirus pandemic hasn’t stopped Costco’s plans for its Champaign store.
The popular retailer has not set a date for the opening of its under-construction location adjacent to Market Place Shopping Center, but the project is on schedule.
“October is the goal,” said Lisa Pittman, Costco’s Midwest regional marketing manager. “It just depends on how things go. But there are no specific dates.”
Costco will take over the space previously occupied by Bergner’s, whose building was demolished during the winter. Construction on the new Costco began immediately.
Observers also will note a tract of land under construction at the southeast corner of Neil Street and Town Center Boulevard; that parcel will be a Costco gas station, Champaign assistant planner and development director Rob Kowalski said.
Chambanamoms.com broke the news in April 2019 of Costco’s addition to the Champaign retail landscape. Champaign will join East Peoria as the only downstate Costco stores in Illinois.
Pittman said a membership drive will begin once Costco establishes “a temporary office” in C-U.
