A word of warning to Champaign motorists: The traffic at the intersection of Springfield Avenue and Mattis Avenue is about to get real.
Champaign’s newest Starbucks location — on the northeast corner of the aforementioned intersection — is slated to open Thursday, Nov. 21.
Chambanamoms broke the news in May of the Starbucks addition to the C-U coffee scene. This will be the eighth Starbucks located in Champaign-Urbana, with three stores on the University of Illinois campus footprint. The three in Champaign outside of the campus area are situated in major retail corridors, with two on North Prospect (including the latest addition at Target) and the other inside the relatively new Carriage Center development on South Neil.
The newest store is the first one west of Prospect Avenue, but geographically represents the center of the city of Champaign. It features parking spots for mobile orders, the first Starbucks in C-U to offer those.
The Starbucks opening continues the evolving landscape for coffee lovers along Springfield Avenue. In October Biggby Coffee — on the southwest corner of the intersection — closed its doors. That followed the opening of a Dunkin’ Donuts store just down the street (in the former Za’s) a few months before.
