School Closings Continue: Weather Impacts Champaign-Urbana on Thursday, Jan. 31
The Champaign Unit 4 School District has announced it will not hold school on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019. All evening activities for Jan. 31 are cancelled.
From Mahomet-Seymour Community Schools: “Due to the ongoing dangerous conditions and extreme temperatures that are forecast for Thursday morning, the Mahomet-Seymour Schools will be closed on Thursday, January 31, 2019. Information will be forthcoming about extracurricular activities that are scheduled or that have been rescheduled for the afternoon/evening of January 31, 2019.”
From Urbana School District 116: All schools and offices will be closed, Thursday, January 31. All practices, activities and events are canceled. School will resume at regular time on Friday, Feb. 1.
Parkland College: “All classes, programs, and services will be canceled at Parkland College on January 31, and all offices will be closed as well. This notice includes all athletic events and partner classes taking place on campus.”
Heritage CUSD #8 is also out on Thursday, Jan. 31. This includes high school students going to Parkland ECCA and Spectrum Pre-K classes. Night sports will be determined on an individual basis and may go ahead as continued after consulting with opposing teams. Please monitor district social media and webpage for updates regarding night sports.
Unity: All Community District #4 (Unity) Schools will be closed Thursday, Jan. 31, 2019. All evening activities cancelled.
Prairieview-Ogden CCSD #197: “PVO will NOT have school on Thursday, January 31 because of wind chill temperatures. Be safe and stay warm.”
St. Joe Grade School and Middle School: “After looking at the updated forecast for the morning we have decided to cancel school for tomorrow, Thursday, January 31. St. Joseph Grade and Middle schools will now be closed all day tomorrow.”
St. Joseph-Ogden High School: “SJO has canceled school tomorrow Thursday, Jan., 31, and will NOT do a delayed start time. Decisions on extracurricular activities will be made by Noon tomorrow and will be communicated to the students through their coach or sponsors.”
University Laboratory High School, Urbana: Due to extreme cold weather,Uni High will remained closed until 4 p.m. on Thurs.,Jan 31. However, evening practices, rehearsals, and games will continue as planned. The Senior girls basketball game is still on as is the orchestra concert.
Monticello Schools: “Monticello Schools will be closed on Thursday, Jan 31 due to forecasted windchill warnings and sub-zero morning temperatures – a decision on after school activities will be posted by Noon on websites and social media.”
Paxton-Buckley-Loda CUSD #10 is out Thursday, Jan. 31. Check the school website for updates on afternoon activity cancellations on Thursday.
Fischer School District One: “Fisher Schools will not be in session tomorrow, Thursday, January 31, 2019, due extremely cold temperatures. Expect extra-curricular contests to be played.”
Rantoul City Schools: Due to Wind Chill Warning until noon, RCS is closed Thursday, Jan 31st.
Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley Community Unit School District #5: GCMS School District will be closed on Thursday, January 31st. Thursday evening athletic contests and varsity practices will take place. Kudos for this creative school closing announcement.
Villa Grove CUSD #302: “Due to continued extremely cold windchill temperatures, Villa Grove CUSD #302 will be closed on Thursday, January 31st. Please stay warm and safe!”
Updates from Area Community Organizations:
City of Champaign: City of Champaign Facilities to reopen at Noon on January 31. “In order to allow weather conditions to subside so employees can safely travel to work during the forecasted cold weather, the Champaign City Building and the Public Works facility will delay opening to the public until noon on January 31, 2019. All emergency services continue to fully operate. Anyone choosing to travel during the bitterly cold weather should exercise caution. Those needing to go outside for any length of time should take extra precautions to protect themselves from the extreme cold.”
Champaign Public Library, Main Branch and Douglass Branch: Both locations of the Champaign Public Library are closed Wednesday, Jan. 30, and reopen Thursday, Jan. 31 at 11 a.m..
Don Moyer Boys & Girls Club, Champaign: “Due to continued inclement weather Don Moyer Boys & Girls Club will remain CLOSED through Thursday, Jan. 31. We will reopen Friday, Feb., 1 at 9:00 a.m.”
Stephens Family YMCA, Champaign: The Stephens Family YMCA will remained closed on Wed., Jan. 30 and will not reopen until 8:00 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31.
