Urban Outfitters, an anchor of the Campustown retail sector at 507 E. Green Street in Champaign, has closed.
As first reported by Chambanamoms, the space was listed for lease by JSM Commercial in September. The listing included an availability date of Feb. 1, 2019.
The store’s exterior sign has been removed and paper covers its windows.
Urban Outfitters had been a fixture on Green Street for 10 years. It offers men’s and women’s clothing, home features, beauty products and a variety of lifestyle products such as cameras and other tech toys, books, and stationery.
A representative at JSM was not immediately available as of Tuesday afternoon; the space remains listed on the LoopNet website at $28 per square foot.
It was not clear Tuesday whether the company planned to move into a different location in Champaign-Urbana, however that seems unlikely; the Urban Outfitters website already has removed the Champaign location. Currently, the closest Urban Outfitters to Champaign-Urbana is located in Oak Brook Mall.
Champaign-Urbana has been a tough environment recently for retail clothiers. Among the business that have closed locally since 2017: Bergners, LOFT, Banana Republic, Eddie Bauer and The Limited. H&M opened at Market Place Shopping Center in the fall. Rumors persist that City Target will be part of the Core Space project at Green Street and Sixth Street.
