Construction will begin Thursday, Sept. 20, on West Side Park’s playground in Champaign.
The 26-year-old playground will be demolished and the area will remain closed throughout construction of the new playground, which will open “around Oct. 26, 2018,” according to the Champaign Park District.
The rest of West Side Park will remain open during construction.
The park’s fenced playground will be rearranged during construction to allow a larger, grassy area for free play. New equipment will include shade structures, swings a tot play structure for ages 2-5, a larger play structure for ages 5-12, an accessible merry-go-round and several benches. Rubber surfacing will be underfoot for the play structures.
Construction will be handled by Mid-Illinois Concrete at an estimated cost of $203, 320, the park district said.
