Wow, what a generous bunch of people we have in the Champaign-Urbana area. The top question on many people’s minds: where can we donate school supplies?
As many people know, getting kids ready to go back to school can be tremendously costly, and that fact is no different in Champaign-Urbana. From school fees to doctors fees, from supplies to clothing, back to school is very expensive for any family – and simply out of reach for many families. Luckily, many groups have stepped up to help.
Here are some answers:
School supply drives:
Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 70, Urbana. Looking for your help in making sure every student has all of the supplies needed for success by hosting a Backpack/School Supply drive! Please consider purchasing items on the list below and placing them in the donation box located in the lobby of the Urbana Police Department. All items will go to elementary grade students in the Urbana School District. Donations will be accepted through Aug. 10, 2018. Visit the complete list of desired school supply items HERE.
Douglas County Rotaract, Tuscola Rotary Club, and Tuscola Kiwanis Club are partnering together to host a School Supply Drive to benefit Tuscola CUSD 301 on Monday, Aug. 20, 2018, 5-7 p.m. The donated items will benefit teachers and students in all three schools: Tuscola High School, East Prairie, and North Ward. Fundaiser:
King School Backpack Buffet, Urbana. It’s an annual tradition: Piato’s lunch buffet, which benefits King Elementary in Urbana. The buffet is only $5 per person and all proceeds will go to these kids for school supplies. School supply donations will also be taken, but $5 is required per person to eat. 11 am to 2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 9 in the King school cafeteria, 804 E. Main St. Urbana.
Taking Donations Anytime:
- One parent said that she doubles her child’s school supply list when she shops, and donates the extra set to her child’s teacher. “She will know who needs it the most.”
- Any school typically will accept school supply donations. Want to buy a set for a student? You don’t need to have your own student in a school to help. Many big box stores have the school supply lists in their back to school section.
- Starting Out Right, Piatt County. Material donations may be dropped off at Community Action, 1115 North State St. (Old Kirby Hospital). Also accepting monetary donations.
- Cunningham Children’s Home in Urbana takes school supply donations, for info click on the link.
