HomeGoods fans, grab your wallets: the popular discount housewares retailer is making the move into Champaign.
HomeGoods this week filed a building permit with the City of Champaign to make alterations to the space at 718 W. Town Center Blvd. The permit requests “interior demolition and new tenant build-out inclusive of a new facade for this tenant space and the adjacent vacant tenant space.”
That location previously held appliance retailer HH Gregg, which closed in spring 2017. It is located in the same strip mall as Joann Fabrics and Ruler Foods.
HomeGoods also recently posted on LinkedIn seeking a Store Manager in Champaign, although the listing is no longer accepting applications. A timeline for opening is unknown at this time, and efforts to reach management were not yet successful.
HomeGoods features a wide variety of merchandise with products for bath, bedding, dining, furniture, gifts, home accessories/accents, kids, kitchen essentials, tableware, lighting, office, outdoor, pet, rugs, seasonal décor, storage, and wall decor and mirrors.
In 2010, celebrity designer and TV personality Courtney Cachet wrote on Huffington Post, “For those of you who are unfamiliar with HomeGoods, I will sum it up for you in one sentence: Really good stuff for your home at really, really good prices. Toss in the old thrill-of-the-hunt shopping thing in most of us and it’s a perfect recipe for utter retail bliss.”
Although the company has no e-commerce operation, it is very active on social media channels, including Pinterest and Instagram, where it has an audience of 2.7 million followers.
A sister company to T.J. Maxx, HomeGoods is no stranger to Central Illinois. It opened in the Bloomington-Normal market in September 2016, following a Peoria store in 2015. HomeGoods has more than 500 locations nationwide, with multiple stores in the Chicago and St. Louis metros.
The news is a bright spot for the Champaign retail scene, which just this week absorbed the news of Bergner’s imminent closure nearby at Market Place Shopping Center.
