Based on Roundabout Theatre Company’s Tony Award-winning production, Sam Mendes (Skyfall, American Beauty) and Rob Marshall’s (Into the Woods and Chicago, the films) Cabaret comes to Champaign’s State Farm Center at 7:30 p.m. on April 28. Come hear some of the most memorable songs in theatre history, including “Cabaret,” “Willkommen” and “Maybe This Time.” Leave your troubles outside — life is beautiful at Cabaret, following your heart while the world loses its way.
Here are our top five reasons to see Cabaret at the State Farm Center — and don’t forget to check below for a chance to win four tickets to the show:
The iconic songs: Fred Ebb and John Kander, two of Broadway’s musical giants, offer the heartbreaking “Maybe This Time,” plus the well-known “Willkommen,” “Money” and the rowdy “Two Girls.”
The themes: The musical was first produced on Broadway some 50 years ago but the ideas espoused are as timeless as they are important, perhaps never more so than in today’s society. Inclusion and acceptance are themes that run throughout the show, which is set in Nazi-era Germany. The dangers of blind nationalism hit home.
The Kit Kat Klub band: Talk about doing it all — the members sing, dance, act and show off their musical instruments at the same time. Your mouth might be agape for much of the show. It’s that impressive.
The acclaim: Cabaret, which won four Tony Awards, debuted in 1966 and was later made into an Oscar-winning movie in 1972. You’ll have a tough time trying to find someone who doesn’t like it. The Houston Chronicle described it as “a devastatingly relevant work of art.” One critic called it “arguably” one of the top five musicals ever made for Broadway. That’s a high standard.
The opportunity: Hey, it’s Broadway and it’s here in Champaign. The State Farm Center’s Broadway series offers the best of the best when it comes to Broadway, and you’ll experience it on a stage befitting its stature.
