Bergner’s is the latest domino to fall in the bricks-and-mortar war against online retailers.
Bon-Ton, the parent company of Bergner’s, has plans to liquidate and will close more than 200 stores, including the location at Champaign’s Market Place Shopping Center.
The company was forced into filing bankruptcy earlier this year and, according to CNBC, will close its stores in the next 10 to 12 weeks, upon an asset sale approved by the bankruptcy court. Bon-Ton’s stores in Danville (Carson’s), Peoria, Springfield, Bloomington and Mattoon (Carson’s) also will close, along with the rest of its Illinois locations.
The news comes on the heels of Toys R Us closing more than 800 stores, including its Champaign location. Other retailers to close recently in C-U: LOFT, Banana Republic, The Limited and Eddie Bauer. On the positive side: H&M plans to open at Market Place this summer.
