Champaign’s newest entry into the world of burgers and ice cream arrives on April 11 when Oberweis Ice Cream and Dairy Store officially opens alongside That Burger Joint.
The adjoining businesses are contained in the building that previously housed Atlanta Bread Company at 1905 S. Neil Street. Oberweis revealed to Chambanamoms in December 2016 its intention to fill the space that ABC vacated in August 2016.
Company president Joe Oberweis, the fourth generation of the family business, is a 2000 College of Business alumnus of the U of I. His parents and two siblings are also alumni. The company isn’t new to the market, however; it has offered home delivery of its products in the Champaign-Urbana area since 1997.
The Oberweis Ice Cream and Dairy Store serves a traditional fountain menu which includes a wide variety of sundaes, shakes, and malts. Cones and dishes of ice cream are a staple. They also have smoothies, coffee drinks and soft serve.
That Burger Joint‘s selling point is that offers a high quality product in a quick serve framework, with fresh ingredients such as angus beef at a fair price. Its website says it is “designed to take you back in time to when your dad used to wrangle burgers at the backyard family BBQ.” There is a drive thru for both product lines.
Employees were busy during training at the store on Monday afternoon and a soft opening for invited guests was planned for Monday and Tuesday. Both restaurants will be open from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 10 a.m.-11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
