Krekel’s, a Central Illinois institution when it comes to burgers and shakes, is coming to Champaign.
A sign in front of the former Vinny’s East Coast Pizzaria says the family-owned restaurant is “coming soon” to the location at 401 W. Kirby Ave. Workers were busy inside the building Friday doing renovations. Vinny’s last month moved to 50 E. Green St. in Champaign.
Krekel’s is known for its made-to-order burgers and 16 varieties of milkshakes at reasonable prices (a double hamburger is $3.19). It also serves chili and other sandwiches such as fish, chicken and pork tenderloin. Its custard selection includes a choice of eight “concretes,” sundaes, specialty treats and cones.
Krekel’s has locations in Springfield, Decatur (four), Macon, Pawnee and Mt. Zion. William Krekel started the business in 1949. One notable quirk: It is typically closed on Sundays.
