Does your child need braces? Or perhaps you want to get your teeth straightened. Champaign-Urbana has many great resources for different health and wellness services. That is why it is important for parents to shop around, to find what works for your child — and what works for your family. Here are some common questions parents ask about orthodontic care. Thanks to Christopher Jordan Orthodontist for sponsoring this list and our annual Orthodontist Guide.
When should a child first see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that your child gets an orthodontic checkup no later than age 7.
Though some children may not need treatment at this age, it is easier to treat some orthodontic problems early on. It is also possible in some instances to help children avoid permanent teeth extractions, or even jaw surgery by treating these problems early.
At Dr. Jordan’s office we have an observation program for children. Each visit that a child comes in to be monitored you receive a $25 credit toward future treatment; it’s a win-win! She/he also will receive points toward a prize when treatment starts.
What should I look for when choosing an orthodontist?
Is she/he a licensed orthodontist? Orthodontists receive an additional three years of education beyond dental school, which allows them to diagnose and treat orthodontic problems at the highest level.
What is the quality of technology that they use? Is the office state-of-the-art, allowing superior service?
Does my insurance cover orthodontic treatment?
Yes, there are insurance policies that cover orthodontics.
Here at Dr. Jordan’s office we do an insurance benefit check as part of our free consultation so you will know exactly how much insurance will cover.
We never want money to stand in the way of our patients receiving the orthodontic treatment they need. We offer different payment options sure to work with any budget.
Can I still eat candy?
Some candy is safe for braces. Staying away from anything sticky, chewy, hard or crunchy is recommended.
If you do choose to eat “brace safe candy,” it is also recommended that you brush your teeth afterwards. Any food you eat can get stuck around braces and cause cavities.
At Dr. Jordan’s office, we discuss many times with patients which foods are safe for braces and which are not.
Does it hurt?
Getting braces or starting clear aligners does not hurt. Dr. Jordan likes to compare it to getting a new pair of shoes; the teeth (like your feet with new shoes) may be a little sore for a couple days, but there is never sharp pain!
