While many people look forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas, some worry how they will get through the holidays.
With an emphasis on spending more money than usual on food and gifts, this time of year can get expensive. And if you are already struggling financially, the holidays can be extremely stressful.
But there are several resources in the Champaign-Urbana area that can help.
Whether you’re looking to provide a holiday meal for your family or presents under the tree for your kids, there are places in the area that can assist in easing the burden this time of year.
UHS Thanksgiving Dinner– The Urbana High School Thanksgiving dinner is served on Thanksgiving from 5-7 p.m. The annual feast is served at no charge to anyone in the Champaign-Urbana area including seniors, international students, homeless persons and those who would otherwise be alone on Thanksgiving. (Donations are accepted.) The MTD is providing two busses to give rides to anyone who is unable to drive to the dinner at the high school. (Busses do not normally run on Thanksgiving day.) To make reservations or if you are in need of transportation, call 384-1100. You do not need a reservation to attend, but it is helpful to the Student Senate if you call and let them know how many people are coming. The program will include numerous prizes and specially written Turkey carols.
Champaign County Toys for Tots– For the last 13 years, the Toys for Tots program has been providing brand new toys for Christmas for eligible children residing in Champaign County. The program’s goal in 2017 is to raise $30,000 in donations and serve over 3,000 children in Champaign County. For more information about how to request a toy, go here.
The Big Give at Stone Creek Church– If you, or someone you know, needs help providing a meal for Thanksgiving, Stone Creek Church in cooperation with Meijer and the Illini Union Office of Volunteer Programs, is offering baskets containing a turkey and various other groceries.
