Downtown Mahomet will be transformed into a winter wonderland for one weekend in January.
The Mahomet Parks & Recreation Department announced “Skate on Main” will be coming to Main Street Jan. 12 from 4-9 p.m. and Jan. 13 from 12-9 p.m.
“Skate on Main”, which is sponsored by YoYo’s Frozen Yogurt, will include a full-service ice rink. The 40×48 portable synthetic ice rink will be installed on Main Street in between the Village Administrative office and Cornbelt Fire Protection District.
Denise Reynolds of the Mahomet Parks & Recreation Department said Mahomet’s Mayor Sean Widener presented the idea to them after attending a similar event.
“Our goal is simply to bring a family-friendly event to the community of Mahomet during the cold wintery months that typically force you to be indoors,” Reynolds said. “We hope the event will provide an opportunity for memories and fun for all.”
Preliminary plans for the event include food trucks, a fire pit, hot chocolate, Disney characters, music, and ice-skating. There will be 100 pairs of ice-skates available to rent.
The cost is $9 per person and includes skate rental.
Downtown businesses will remain open throughout the event. Street parking will be available as well and the parking lot between Cornbelt Fire Department and the Mahomet Community Center will also be open.
