The Oberweis Ice Cream and Dairy Store that will occupy the South Neil Street location formerly belonging to Atlanta Bread Company has begun construction on the Champaign site.
Workers begin preparing the former Atlanta Bread Company building for its conversion to Oberweis Ice Cream and Dairy Store in Champaign.
Oberweis president Joe Oberweis revealed to Chambanamoms in December that his family’s company planned to open a store in Champaign. In the same building would be That Burger Joint, Oberweis’ sister business with a fast-casual burgers/shakes/fries theme.
The company originally planned a July opening but construction began only recently, with the property secured by fencing. Atlanta Bread Company closed last August.
The Oberweis Ice Cream and Dairy Store serves a traditional fountain menu which includes a wide variety of sundaes, shakes, and malts. Cones and dishes of ice cream are a staple. They also have smoothies, coffee drinks and soft serve.
That Burger Joint‘s selling point is that offers a high quality product in a quick serve framework, with fresh ingredients such as angus beef at a fair price. Its website says it is “designed to take you back in time to when your dad used to wrangle burgers at the backyard family BBQ.” And attention parents: there WILL be a drive thru, for both product lines.
