Dirt is moving at the site of the new Aldi grocery store in Savoy despite the weather’s great protestations. And if the weather actually decides to cooperate, you’ll see an Aldi grand opening this fall.
“We need Mother Nature to stop raining every day, which seems like a tall order these days,” said Heather Moore, Aldi’s Dwight Division vice president. “We have every confidence we’ll be open this fall.”
Chambanamoms broke the news in December that Aldi was coming to Savoy, joining its other stores in Urbana and Champaign. The new site is near Route 45 and Calvin Street, north of Christie Clinic.
Moore said the new 18,000 square foot store will be very similar to its Champaign store.
“It is bigger than the Urbana store, but Urbana is being renovated later this year,” Moore said.
That renovation will be this summer, should be completed prior to Thanksgiving, and will expand the Urbana store to 18,000 square feet as well. Moore said the Urbana Aldi will be closed approximately a couple weeks for a portion of the construction.
