The Chicago Cubs’ biggest fans just might have been the students at St. Matthew Catholic School in Champaign.
When the Cubs recorded the final out of Wednesday’s Game 7 to secure their first World Series title since 1908, it clinched something meaningful for the kids, too — a guaranteed day off of school.
Father Robert Rayson had promised the students a day off of school if the Cubs ever won a World Series. So here’s the letter he sent to parents following the Cubs’ victory:
Dear Parents:
When I became pastor over 4 1/2 years ago, I promised the faculty and student body that if the Chicago Cubs ever won the World Series, I would give the students a day off. Well I have to eat my words as the Chicago Cubs are now World Series Champions. In consultation with Mrs. Klein, we have decided to give the students a day off of school on Monday. With the students off already on Friday this will allow for an extended weekend for our families. Enjoy! And Go Cubs!
God Bless,
Fr. Rayson
Rayson, a 47-year-old native of northwest Indiana, was not available for an interview Wednesday but his staff said he was “excited.”
A picture on the home page of the school’s website shows the Cubs’ signature “W” flag flying atop the school’s flagpole.
