Champaign-Urbana area families will have the rare opportunity to see a presidential candidate up close on Saturday when Democratic hopeful Bernie Sanders visits the University of Illinois.
Sanders, who trails rival Hillary Clinton in the battle for Democratic delegates, will appear at the UI’s Activities and Recreation Center (Gym 1) at 201 E. Peabody Dr., Champaign. Doors open at 11 a.m. The event is free and open to everyone on a first-come, first-served basis but the Sanders campaign said reservations are “strongly encouraged.” RSVP here.
From the Sanders website: “For security reasons, please do not bring bags and limit what you bring to small, personal items like keys and cell phones. Weapons, sharp objects, chairs, and signs or banners on sticks will not be allowed through security. Metered parking is available at the venue.”
The Illinois primary is Tuesday. Sanders has appealed to young voters during the primary season with a message that includes free tuition for all college attendees.
