Champaign Unit 4 schools said Friday the rate of children that received their first choice in the kindergarten assignment process (if they received an assignment) was 88.7 percent, the same as 2014.
Of 697 total applicants, 23 students remained unassigned following the initial process. A year ago, 10 families were unassigned out of 681 applicants. The district has not released data regarding which schools were most chosen by kindergarten families, or what schools have space remaining for those who haven’t yet registered.
“This year’s kindergarten assignment process was one of the smoothest to date for our new families,” assistant superintendent Susan Zola said in a news release. “We saw a consistently high percentage of families receiving their first choice and were able to work with our unassigned families to find a placement for their children. We also continued our communication efforts from last year that helped make the process easier to understand and the experience more family-friendly.”
The 2015 breakdown, according to Unit 4 figures:
Total applicants: 697
Families unassigned: 3.3 %
Of the 674 students assigned:
Families who received one of their top five choices: 99.4 %
Families who received their first choice: 88.7 %
Families who received their second choice: 4.2 %
Families who received their third choice: 3.1 %
Families who received their fourth choice: 2.8 %
Families who received their fifth choice: 0.6 %
Free/reduced lunch applicants: 57 %
According to the district, families gave Unit 4 an average rating of 4.72 out of 5 when asked about their registration experience at the Family Information Center.
