There’s good news for anyone who’s frustrated with having to drive a longer distance to renew their license plates, driver’s licenses or take care of any other business at the driver services facility, which has been closed in Champaign since Nov. 9, 2014.
A new location has been selected for the facility, which will be at 2012 Round Barn Road in Champaign, according to a press release from Secretary of State Jesse White.
This new building will resolve the issues that the former location on Bradley Avenue had, including limited space and parking.
Henry Haupt, White’s deputy press secretary, said the new 6,000-square-foot facility met the criteria of having a significantly larger facility than the previous one. A larger parking lot was also something that was needed.
“The location was important,” Haupt said. “It’s very conveniently located close to the interstate (I-57).”
Additionally, he said, cost considerations played a role in selecting the new facility.
The building will undergo necessary renovations, and once those are completed, Haupt said, the driver services facility will be open to the public sometime in the summer.
