It’s official: middle school boys in the Champaign-Urbana area will have a new school choice next school year, and it will make its first home in an Urbana church. (We first wrote about this when we featured Jason Fisher as a Chambana Dad to Know several months ago).
Campus Middle School for Boys will open in August 2014. The new, private, single-sex school for boys will be located on the third floor space of the First United Methodist Church of Urbana, located at 304 S. Race Street. Campus Middle School for Boys will open under the auspices of Campus Middle School for Girls. Although located in a church, it does not have any religious affiliation.
According to Executive Director Tami Adams:
“CMS for Girls has been receiving requests for a boys’ program for the last several years. We are very pleased to provide this option for the community, and we are encouraged by the level of interest and support that we have received so far.”
“Both schools offer a challenging middle school curriculum in a small, cooperative learning environment. The schools’ close proximity to the University of Illinois facilitates use of campus museums, theater and laboratories as extensions of the classroom. Both schools also offer limited class sizes and hands-on learning activities tailored to the needs and learning styles of adolescent boys and girls.”
Application materials for Campus Middle School for Boys will be available soon, and information sessions for prospective students and their families will be held in January. Admissions decisions will be made in early March 2014.
