If you listen to Mix 94.5 in the morning, you’ve probably heard the man we think is one of the funniest in Champaign-Urbana. Kevin Lambert has been in the entertainment business since he was 14, first as a jazz musician. He found his calling doing comedy, first on the club scene and later on HBO Comedy On The Road. He worked with stars including Sam Kinnison, Louie Anderson, Rosie O’Donnell, Tommy Chong, and Richard Belzer, and met his wife while doing comedy in Indiana. He says his most rewarding job is being a dad to 14-year-old Darek and 10-year-old Mitchell.
See why we think Kevin Lambert is a Chambana Dad to Know.
Q: We think you’re a funny guy. What do your kids think of your humor?
They like it most of the time, because my humor is usually down to their level. That’s why my wife says she has three boys. There is also those times on the radio I crack a joke about them, then they may have an issue about it. I remember one time talking on the radio about Darek going through potty training. He really didn’t like the idea of me talking about that, he said that was added pressure to perform.
Q: What is your favorite way to spend time with your kids?
Just spending time is the key. We like similar things so that makes it easy. We play all sports together. We like playing video games and watching movies together too.
Q: Who is your favorite comedian and why?
Frankie Bastille. I worked with him numerous times years ago. Every time he hit the stage he had that magic and charisma that was infectious. He always made folks laugh no matter the crowd. Ten or 300, it didn’t matter to him. His comedy always brought people together in laughter, no matter who they were. He is no longer with us, but he taught me that you always perform the best you can for people no matter how big the audience is. My Dad also taught me that if you can make someone smile or laugh your day was worth while.
Q: What has been your most embarrassing moment as a parent?
The time our family was visiting my wife’s parents. Mitchell was 2, and he was working on that whole potty training thing. I remember looking out the front window of my in-laws house. All I saw was this little butt, and pants down by his ankles. He was going No. 1 IN THE FRONT YARD. The neighbors loved it.
Q: Do you ever talk about your kids on the radio?
I pretty much bring my life to the radio. I think that is what makes our show real. I have two boys, and Sarah has two boys. We have to talk about them, they are our life.
Q: We really enjoy your show. What makes your partnership with Sarah work so well?
I’ve been in radio for around 15 years, and Sarah is the best partner I’ve ever had. It makes work easy when you really get along and care about the person you work with. It’s easy to put emotion, laughter and arguments together when it’s family. It’s not fake radio with Sarah, it’s real. I consider the people I work with on the radio here family. I’m really blessed. I have a wonderful wife (Angela) a wonderful work wife (Sarah), and two wonderful boys. I won the lottery, without all the cash :).
